The Gynecologic Disease Center at Walter Reed Army Medical Center

The design and plans for an 8000 square foot Gynecologic Disease Center have been completed and the renovation of ward 67 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center will be underway during the latter part of February 2005. Completion of the project is expected in October 2005. The Center will contain the consolidated administrative, research and clinical elements of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The funding for this renovation and the associated equipment is supported through five different supportive grants, including portions of funds from the Gynecologic Disease Program.

The Center will provide space for a research laboratory, examination suite, office space, conference room, and microscope viewing area. In addition, the Gynecologic Disease Center will contain a Women's Wellness Center that will provide educational materials and provide a relaxing atmosphere for patients with gynecologic disease. In addition, there will be a boutique where volunteer cosmetologists can provide free "make-overs" to female patients with cancer. The Gynecologic Disease Center will be the flagship for gynecologic care within the Department of Defense.

National Cancer Institute Gynecologic Surgery Services at Walter Reed

After approximately 2.5 years of planning, a formal memorandum of understanding was established between the National Cancer Institute and Walter Reed Army Medical Center that will enable non-DOD beneficiaries on NCI protocols to be treated at Walter Reed under Secretary of the Army Designee status. As part of this initiative, Johnstown certain breast cancer patients that have a high propensity to develop ovarian cancer may come to NCI to participate in a national trial aimed at increased surveillance or surgical removal of their ovaries. Johnstown patients would enroll on the NCI protocol and have their surgery free at Walter Reed. The costs of the operative procedures would be assumed by the NCI as part of their trial participation.
